Key Performance Indicators (KPI) Atomic Data Validation

Client Business Issues:

A leading telecommunications company was in the process of a major business transformation. As the initiative evolved, they wanted to ensure that previous and ongoing initiatives were integrated where valuable. A previous initiative had developed a set of Executive KPIs that mapped to specific business objectives, sub-objectives and critical success factors for use within executive reporting. A gap analysis was requested to validate that a data completeness problem exists, dimension the extent of the problem, assess the impact on the overall business transformation initiative and facilitate the creation of mitigation plans.

Our Approach:

The planned approach that was successfully implemented involved the coordination of the different business transformation teams and validation of required data elements. First we met with the key players to gain sufficient background, communicate our objectives, facilitate feedback and foster project cooperation. Next the existing KPIs that had been identified were validated with team members and a compilation of general descriptions was prepared. Each individual KPI (over 180) was documented with formula inputs to identify data elements, eliminate redundancies, align terminology and associate the results with business roles and related business transformation efforts. As a result, a list of all data elements mapped their system of record (SAP), Siebel, Cognos, Essbase, etc.) was compiled. Review sessions were than held with each business team to determine the availability and accuracy of the required data.

With this approach, we were able to map each KPI from its high-level business objective to the low-level data elements that allow for each KPI’s computation.

Value Received By Client:

As a result of completing this GAP analysis the client was quickly able to understand the availability of KPIs by business objectives and processes and the impact on the business transformation initiatives. A detailed plan was presented to close the gaps identified and a set of valuable next steps were recommended. These KPIs are now forming the basis for the firm’s Executive scorecard and dashboard solution.
